Key findings include:
Gurrie Middle School: WE Make A Difference!
Due to the overwhelming success of our '10K' and 'Gurrie Middle School: WE Make a Difference' initiatives the past two school years we continued making a positive difference in the communities we're from and beyond!
As of the end of the 2011-2012 school year Gurrie had logged in 3,477.75 hours of service. Combined with the 4,906.5 hours of service from the 2010-2011 school year, Gurrie has provided over 8,384.25 hours of support and service during the past two years!!!

EARLY ACT SUPPORTS ACES!
On Wednesday February 8th, Gurrie Middle School's Early Act Club presented Cynthia Frymark from ACES a check for $100. The club raised money by selling Smecils during lunch to donate to this local organization. ACES, Adolescent Counseling, Educuation and Support is a non-profit organization that bridges the gap between crisis and covers care so youngsters can get help. For more infomation, contact Kathleen Rupert, Early Act Club Sponsor, at (708) 482-2720 ext. 1246 or at email@example.com.

Early Act Club Raises $800!
Early Act Club’s big project this year is to help Rotary International finish the job of eradicating Polio in the world. Rotary has been donating millions of dollars and man hours for over 20 years to provide the medicine needed to prevent the spread of Polio in children throughout the world. They have slashed cases by 99%, but there are still four countries with cases: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nigeria. Rotary has teamed up with the Gates Foundation to finish the job Rotary started in 1988. The Gates Foundation is awarding a $255 million challenge grant to Rotary, which Rotary will match with $100 million raised by its members over the next three years. The Rotary district 6450 Governor is asking all Inter Act (high school) and Early Act Clubs to consider this as their International Project this year.
7TH GRADE WINS COIN WAR!!
To support this project, the Early Act Club had its fifth annual “Change War” from October 31st until November 11th. This was a contest between grade levels (7th and 8th grade) to see who can put the most silver (or bills) in the grade level jar during lunch. To make this contest a little more interesting, students could subtract from the other grade level’s grand total by putting pennies in the other grade level’s fundraising jar. We are pleased to announce that Gurrie Middle School raised $800.01. 7th grade donated the most silver and bills and received the least amount of pennies.

Early Act Club Helps Local Food Pantry
Gurrie Middle School’s Early Act Club sponsored a canned food drive to benefit the St. Cletus Food Pantry. The winning advisory that donated the most non-perishable items won a pizza party. The winning advisory was Mr. Pontrelli and Mr. Sullivan. They donated 546 items. Gurrie Middle School overall donated 1475 items to the food pantry.
If you are interested in donating to the St. Cletus Food Pantry, they are located at 600 W. 55th Street. You can also contact Mary Beth Ford at (708) 215-5418. They are really in need of canned meat, peanut butter, meals in a box/can, dried and canned beans, diapers, toiletries, paper goods, or any non-perishable items you can give.

Last year, the EMM Club joined a program called "Adopt A Beach" through the Alliance For The Great Lakes. Students and teachers worked at the two adopted beaches (12th Street and North Avenue) several times throughout the year. This group removed over 300 pounds of garbage on Saturday, September 3rd!

The most recent endeavor by the EMM Club involves a program through the Alliance for the Great Lakes—Adopt A Beach. This is the largest volunteer program present on 4 of the 5 Great Lakes. More than 9,000 volunteers, now including GMS, participate in the program. Teams remove and monitor litter, assess beach health, and conduct several water tests. The data that is collected is used for education to share with local beach authorities, and to improve our beaches.
2009-2010...AN AMAZING YEAR: 27,606 POSITIVE ACTS!
JUST LIKE BUTTER...
WE'RE ON A ROLL!!
The students of GMS reached the goal of 10,000 positive acts by January through individual and group efforts inside the school and in the Gurrie community!! This absolutely amazing year ended with a grand total of 27,606 positive acts--nearly THREE TIMES the original goal of 10K!!
Gurrie Activities Council, the Every Monday Matters Club, and Early Act were the student organizations that led the way with many humanitarian efforts.
Students, staff, and family members volunteered in school, after school, and on the weekends in a variety of ways.
*HONOR FLIGHT CHICAGO: students, staff, and family greeted vets at Midway Airport when they returned from Washington D.C., staff served as guardians and worked as early morning volunteers as well as working a fundraiser that brought in $58,000 for the organization.
*raised money for ROTARY INTERNATIONAL to eradicate polio
*LINCOLN PARK COMMUNITY SHELTER: students and staff prepared several hot breakfast meals and dinners throughout the spring and summer as well as sack lunches
*EMPTY BOWLS: students, staff, and family made bowls and also participated in the actual event
*LIFE SOURCE: staff organized and hosted a blood drive
*EARTH DAY clean up in Cook County Forest Preserves
*FOOTBALL FOR HEART: raised $1,700 for the American Heart Association
*PROJECT LINUS: made 85 blankets to give to children in Haiti
*NIKE RE-USE A SHOE: collected nearly 300 pairs of shoes to be converted into outdoor basketball courts and running tracks
*PARTY WITH A PURPOSE: raised $3,400 for Stand Up For Kids
Let's keep the momentum going and make the 2010-11 school year another unforgettable one by continuing to make the world a better place--one action at a time!
